Certain of the most central categories in the thinking of the contemporary art of the 20th century - to be understood as the ones of the modernity, avant-garde and, since some time, the post modernity, find themselves having also a political sense. IT IS WRITTEN (Es steht geschrieben) is a title, borrowed form the theatrical play by Swiss author Friedrich Dürenmatt. This play that provoked a scandal after its premiere in 1947 puts in question the obsession of a text (the Bible).
The project IT IS WRITTEN, composed of sound works, attempts to interpret the text in the most natural way: by its lecture. The six artists invited for this project use the text and writing in a great part of their work. Their propositions are destined to be heard or listened in a public space and allow a non-literary approach to a text. The texts produced by artists and interpreted by French speaking actors are diffused in the anamorphic architecture of the new Centre Pompidou in Metz designed by Shigeru Ban.
The project links two opposite elements: the political engagement – with the letter by Claire Fontaine that puts an accent on the tone we should speak about politics today; the French hymn singed by an illegal African immigrant by Jonathan Monk – and poetical engagement – as in the erotic dream by Karl Holmqvist, under the disguise of female voice; the Dadaist haiku by Adam Vackar that merge the glamour and horror of the mass media, composed of news headlines in the newspaper; the unperceived moments of the daily life by Tomas Vanek and also the Dadaist poems by Adam Pendleton. These audio works are to be listened in the space of the Centre Pompidou, separated one from the other by long moments of silence.
IT IS WRITTEN is a project participated by several artists who oppose themselves to the intrusion of the economical thinking into the arts. The immateriality of the project and its presence in the public spaces of the museum enable a real engagement, as well as for the artists as for the audience. We do not want to please, seduce or to create a pleasant atmosphere. IT IS WRITTEN is an artist’s “cooperative”, where everyone participates free of charge to act in a context different form the logic of the market. IT IS WRITTEN is a temporary project, which changes its location and acts in different contexts and spaces.

Certaines des catégories les plus centrales pour penser la création artistique du XXe siècle, à savoir celles de modernité, d’avant-garde et, depuis quelque temps, de post-modernité, se trouvent avoir également un sens politique. Vous semblent-elles d’un quelconque intérêt pour concevoir en des termes précis ce qui attache « l’esthétique » au « politique » ?

IT IS WRITTEN (Es steht geschrieben) est un titre emprunté à la pièce de théâtre de l’écrivain suisse Friedrich Dürenmatt. Cette pièce, qui provoqua un scandale après sa première représentation en 1947, met en question l’obsession du texte (en l’occurrence La Bible dans la pièce).
Le projet IT IS WRITTEN, composé d’œuvres sonores, tente de donner au texte son interprétation la plus naturelle, par la lecture. Les six artistes invités pour ce projet utilisent le texte et l’écriture comme un matériau de travail à part entière. Leurs propositions, destinées à être écoutées ou entendues dans un espace public, permettent d’envisager de manière non littéraire la lecture d’un texte. Des textes produits par les artistes et interprétés par des comédiens francophones sont diffusés dans l’architecture ondulante du nouveau Centre Pompidou à Metz, conçu par Shigeru Ban.
Le projet lie deux éléments opposés : l’engagement politique - avec la lettre de Claire Fontaine qui met l'accent sur la façon dont on devrait parler de politique aujourd’hui ; l'hymne français chanté par un sans-papier, de Jonathan Monk – et l’engagement poétique – comme dans le rêve érotique de Karl Holmqvist, sous le déguisement d’une voix féminine ; les haïkus dadaïstes d’Adam Vackar, mélangeant le glamour et l’horreur des médias et composés à partir de grands titres de journaux ; des instants l’inaperçu de la réalité du quotidien, de Tomas Vanek ou bien encore les poèmes dadaïstes d’Adam Pendleton. Ces pièces sonores sont diffusées dans l’espace du Centre Pompidou et séparées par de larges temps de silence, pendant toute la journée.
IT IS WRITTEN est une œuvre partagée par plusieurs artistes qui s’opposent à l’ingérence perpétuelle de la logique économique dans le champ de l’art. L’immatérialité du projet et sa présence dans les espaces publics du centre permettent un véritable engagement, autant du point de vue des œuvres et de leur contenu que pour le spectateur lui-même : on ne cherche ici ni à plaire ou à séduire, ni à créer une ambiance. IT IS WRITTEN est une « coopérative » artistique, où chacun participe gratuitement pour agir dans un contexte hors de la logique du marché. IT IS WRITTEN est un projet temporaire qui se déplace et agit dans différents contextes, traverse des espaces sans les occuper.
